This 9-1/2" x 4" black and white photograph shows a multi-story brick building. The building is long and low, with three arched doorways with driveways leading up to them. There is a sign on the front that reads "Pauley Lumber Co., Quality & Service, Use Us." "Where the Home Begins, Pauley Lumber Co., L. H. Pauley" is written on the photograph.
The Pauley family operated lumberyards in several Nebraska communities. Son Ludwig H. Pauley organized Pauley Lumber Company in Lincoln in 1909 and was general manager in 1925 when they commissioned Lincoln architects J. B. Miller and Fritz Craig to design this unique Neo-classical complex, combining their sheds, workshop, and offices at 965 S. 27th Street in Lincoln, Nebraska. The 1925 Lincoln directory lists the company as including father Conrad (a native of Russia), sons Ludwig, Ray, William (living in Hastings and presumably overseeing a company branch there), Harold (in Beatrice), and son-in-law Adam Yost. The two-story office portion at left is the only portion still standing today
