This 6-1/2" x 4-1/2" black and white photograph shows a street view of the H. Herpolsheimer Company. The two-story building has display windows on both levels, a round tower at the corner and ornate decorations along the roofline. A U.S. Mail box, a water fountain and fire hydrant are located on the corner. "H. Herpolsheimer Co" is written on the photograph.
Henry Herpolsheimer was born in Prussia in 1843 and immigrated to America with his parents in 1849. He served in an Indiana cavalry unit during the Civil War. He came to Lincoln in 1880 and ten years later had architect Artemas Roberts design the Herpolsheimer Department Store at the southwest corner of 12th and N Streets. It was nicknamed "The Daylight Store" for its ample storefront windows and bright electric lights. Advertisements for the store appearing in a 1928 directory included the slogans "Quality Always at a Price" and "Our Mail Order Department Will Shop for You." Herpolsheimer's closed in 1931, and the rear portions of the building were incorporated into a tire store built on the site. Those remnants were demolished in 1998.
