Color postcard (14 x 9 cm) captioned "13th and O Streets looking west, Lincoln, Nebr." at the top of the card in red type. Miller & Paine store is seen on the southwest corner of 13th & O Street. There are pedestrians, a street railway car, and horse drawn buggies on the street. On the right side of the street a sign on the building has the words Sheridan and Lumber.
The Miller & Paine building shown here on the southwest corner of 13th & O Streets in Lincoln came into existence in 1889 when Dr. Paine joined the already established J. E. Miller & Co. In 1898, Miller & Paine occupied this corner for the first time. In 1916 they constructed an eight-story building on this site and in 1935 it became the first air-conditioned department store in Nebraska. Miller & Paine was purchased by Dillards of Little Rock, Arkansas in 1988 and the downtown Lincoln location was closed. Source: McKee, James L. Remember When.....Memories of Lincoln.
